Knowledge is power. This rings true throughout everything we do in life, but even more so in our line of numismatic business. The more you know about what you own and what you are looking to add to your collection, the better. On the other side of the coin (pun intended), the more you know about what you are selling is also important when it comes to getting the most out of your collection.
So for Nikki, a buyer and seller in her daytime job for our parent company, SilverTowne, and a camera operator for the live show at night, her knowledge is vast about a number of coins. This allows her to make the best decisions when purchasing or selling to customers. This also gives her the background to make an informed decision on what she deems to be one of the most beautiful coins she has ever seen in this continuation of our “What’s Your Favorite Coin” series.
The Winner: Draped Bust Coin Series - (More Specifically) Draped Bust Dollar (1794-1804)
Early silver dollars are important to anyone invested in collecting United States coinage. The Draped Bust silver dollars are some of the earliest struck, which makes it a no brainer when choosing a coin based on history alone.
“Early coins like the Bust dollar are just so much more appealing to me because of their history,” Nikki said. “That also makes them rarer. It’s fascinating that you can hold a coin in your hands that's over 200 years old and it looks as good as some of them still do.”
While the beginnings of US coinage appeal to her, Nikki first and foremost believes that the Bust series is overall, the most appealing to look at.
“I just think it is a beautiful coin,” she stated. “They are more feminine and exude a sort of sophistication. The detail in the engraving of the hair with the addition of the stars on the obverse is, like I said, just flat out beautiful. The reverse is just as intricate and finely detailed. That design has everything I think a coin should have.”
