With a number of things unknown in accordance with the United States Mint’s production schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they recently confirmed the production of American Silver Eagle bullion coins. However, the coins were produced at Philadelphia when they are typically produced at the facility in West Point.
According to the Mint, the reduced production at West Point between April 8th and April 20th due to coronavirus measures led to the production of 240,000 American Silver Eagle bullion coins at Philadelphia. The coins were packaged manually and shipped in monster boxes containing 25 tubes of 20 coins. Those monster boxes were labeled with tracking numbers and additional tracking numbers were directly handwritten on the boxes. The numbers used for the boxes are labeled 400,000 through and including 400,479 as stated by the Mint. The tracking of these numbers are extra measures that have been taken to ensure the recognition of the coins minted at the Philadelphia location.
These coins are still being distributed through authorized dealers and purchasers through the United States Mint and will not be available for public sale. None of the coins will bear a mintmark as is traditional of the American Silver Eagle bullion coins.
The West Point Mint production of silver and gold American Eagles continued on April 21st.
