2021 has already been so full of powerhouse releases from the United States. However, it is only going to continue to get better. While this next release might not necessarily be considered a “powerhouse,” it is an annual staple in the collecting hobby. Yesterday, the Mint released the 2021 Native American $1 Coin design.
Releasing in 25-coin rolls, 100-coin bags, and 250-coin boxes from both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, the 2021 $1 coins will honor and highlight the service of Native Americans in the United States military dating all the way back to 1775. The obverse will feature eagle feathers which in the Native American culture, are traditionally earned in battle or while performing a brave act. Eagle feathers themselves are taught to be revered and respected and are expected to be handled with the greatest of care. They are also displayed in homes as a form of pride. There are five stars surrounding the feathers representing the five branches of the U.S. military while the circle in the background is yet another nod to the Native Americans and their culture. Inscriptions can be found around the outer rim of the design reading “NATIVE AMERICANS -- DISTINGUISHED MILITARY SERVICE SINCE 1775,” “$1,” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
