The Coin Vault Meet the Rep Series: Codey L.

In this day and age, there is a certain level of noise. We do not necessarily mean volume-wise, rather outside influence, chatter, distraction. We mean talk first, listen later, and the latter is never guaranteed. Noise. It happens in every facet of this unique world that we live in and it certainly remains true in the numismatic hobby. That’s why it sometimes takes someone not well-versed in the ins and outs of the business to cut through all that outside noise and just listen. We like to think that is one of our biggest secrets here at The Coin Vault, and more specifically, with the Preferred Customer Division. Representatives like Codey are more than equipped to handle all that comes with the noise and mitigate its influence when dealing with customers who are just looking to be heard.

“I’m not a salesman and I never have been,” Codey said. “I just listen to customers and take notice when they talk about not just their experience in coin collecting, but also in their personal lives.”

As Codey does not naturally come from a coin collecting or numismatic background, he has started collecting himself and feels as though it has helped him connect with his clients even more.

“I like coins from The Perth Mint,” he revealed. “I also like Morgan Silver Dollars too but they aren’t necessarily in the budget right now. But I find that even though I don’t have this massive collection myself, collecting just the amount I am allows me to help understand why customers are adamant about the items they want. I know how important it is to get that missing piece now.”

Prior to digging his heels in at The Coin Vault, Codey worked his way up at Arby’s and eventually became the General Manager. Ten years in his back pocket mixed with 80-hour work weeks were becoming just a little too much. When the opportunity came along for the change in pace, he grabbed the chance to try something new.

“I wanted something different,” he stated. “I wanted to have a family and working as much as I was every week was not an ideal situation for that. Coming home with a brain that’s been dissolved into mush was just not ideal anymore as well.”

Recently married, Codey admits that the family-based environment also helped him take the plunge when coming to the Preferred Customer Division.

“It’s a much more family-oriented business here rather than feeling like a corporation,” Codey said. “You also get to learn something new every single day because that’s just it, this business is complex and you won’t know everything there is to know about coins. I get to use my brain and even though you find yourself in this fast-paced, go-go-go environment, it never feels like that. It helps that everyone surrounding me is, yes, doing the same thing, but that we all get along so well.”

Other than lending an ear to his customers, Codey also finds that one of the most basic and important principles of doing his job is honesty.

“Just being honest with customers is my ‘approach’ if you will,” he asserted. “Also, I won’t stop until I find what the customer needs. Honesty and dedication; that’s it. That’s my philosophy.”

As simple as it sounds, it has always been the calling card for his success. From an outside perspective, Codey certainly has made his point more than a few times in a room full of his fellow peers.

“I always want to be better than last month,” he said. “I want to help as many people as possible while continuing to learn and grow.”

Outside of work, Codey helps out at his local Christian School as a monitor/teacher when he can. He also helps his mom run the historic Winchester Speedway during the racing season. If not lending a helping hand, he loves photography.

As far as looking to the future being a member of the Preferred Customer Division, he welcomes new challenges and hopes to grow his relationships with his customers.

“I’m very much open to accepting new challenges so that I can progressively get better, but also utilize those skills to help customers grow their collections,” Codey said. “I also want to grow my collection so that when clients call me, they feel like they are exchanging their ideas and hopes with a fellow collector and ultimately a friend.”

In a much broader sense, Codey just hopes to be able to do his part in the evolution of The Coin Vault as the Preferred Customer Division aims to focus on one-on-one interactions with collectors instead of just dealing with wider audiences.

“I look forward to teaching new clients about coins and offering advice when I can,” he said. “I’m thrilled to be with this company and I hope to be a part in watching it grow.
