The Coin Vault Meet the Rep Series: Dorrey M.

Versatile [vur-suh-tl or, especially British, -tahyl]; adjective: capable of or adapted for turning easily from one to another of various tasks, field of endeavor, etc.

In most cases, those who are willing to learn more and do more will end up doing something years down the road that they never expected or really even “technically qualified” for. However, hard work pays off and opportunities are bound to come along. Every employer wants someone like that at the end of the day and speaking from experience, The Coin Vault has a number of them. More specifically, one of them has acclimated themselves into the team that we call the Preferred Customer Division. With the versatility that Dorrey has displayed over the years, she has made herself a key member of a team that specializes in coin acquisition for determined clients.

“I started in shipping in 2005,” Dorrey said. “From there I moved to returns and then upfront to our retail space where I also was a backup for engraving. Customer service at our call center was next and as recently as March of 2021, I am a member of the Preferred Customer Division.”

For 16 years now, Dorrey has been a sponge in the numismatic business with a specific interest in what we do here with our parent company, SilverTowne, at the forefront. With The Coin Vault now in its 33rd year, the crossover has been inevitable and a definite learning curve.

“I’m learning to re-train my brain,” Dorrey claims. “From just taking retail orders where I was at in customer service to building relationships with customers that require longevity and personalization, it is different but in a really good and interesting way.”

While putting customers first is like second nature to her, the collecting side of the job does not come as natural when it comes to personal interest. As some may see that as a disadvantage and would certainly have a case for it, her take is quite the opposite.

“I don’t really collect anything personally when it comes to coins,” she said, “but I do buy silver for my granddaughter all the time. Does that in some way give me a disadvantage in this particular job, yes. However, because of the insight I have from working for this company for so long, I’m not interested in leading my customers down a path that will not suit them in the future. My ability to be completely honest with them and cut through the bull is my greatest strength.”

Having seen the personal growth of the company over the years, it is easy to see why she has maintained consistent success at all the facets she has been a part of. While watching the company grow, she also was able to do the same.

“When I started, there was no TV studio or on-site PCD division or shipping department,” Dorrey recalls. “The shipping department worked out of what is now the break room. I can’t believe how much this place has changed and for the better. I’m excited to see it go even further. I wouldn’t want to work for any other company.”

As some members of the Preferred Customer Division are fueled by a competitive environment, Dorrey finds herself committed to a different philosophy.

“I’m not very competitive at all,” she said. “The only thing I’m concerned about is doing my job the best that I can for myself and for my customers. I remain friendly and focused on a positive attitude. Of course I would like to get better each and every day and set new goals for myself every month but that’s an ideal that is tailored to me and what I’m doing, not everyone else.”

While her customers’ needs remain a top priority at the same time she is working towards her goals, she understands that life happens and no matter how her customers react to certain calls, it never changes her approach.

“I never want to be pushy,” Dorrey stated. “I understand when things happen and customers are not ready to move forward with some items. It is never going to be a negative experience for me when someone passes on something. I am only here to guide and help customers fulfill their collections.”

Away from the day-to-day workings as a Preferred Customer Division representative, Dorrey enjoys camping and spending time with her son and granddaughter.

“I love to be outside and I love to be around people,” she said. “I’m a very social person and I have no doubt that that serves me in my position and with customers. I genuinely enjoy being with and talking to people.”
