The 2024 Native American Dollar will be available today beginning at 12pm EST from the United States Mint in 25-coin rolls, 100-coin bags, and 250-coin boxes.
Established to honor and recognize the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans, the Native American $1 Coin Program changes its reverse design annually. This year’s design shows an eagle staff, which is an American symbol of respect honor and patriotism. It is paired together with an American flag to represent the dual citizenship of Native Americans.
The Indian Citizenship Act was signed into law on June 2, 1924. It granted U.S. citizenship to “all non-citizen Indians born within the territorial limits of the United States.” However, the most important part of the Act was that it did not require American Indians to give up their tribal citizenship to become U.S. citizens. This allowed them to preserve their tribal identity and maintain the right to communal tribal property. In addition to giving American Indians the rights and protections that come with being a citizen of the United States, it also unlocked doors for Indians to become citizens on their own terms, “adding to the diversity of thought and culture of our nation.”
The obverse design remains a portrait of Sacagawea carrying her son, Jean-Baptise.
Minted in Philadelphia and Denver, the coins will be available for purchase with a household limit of 10. The 25-coin rolls retail at $34.50, the 100-coin bags at $117.50, and the 250-coin boxes at $289.75.
