The United States Mint will kick off their last five designs for the American Women Quarters Program tomorrow with the first 2025 quarter dollar honoring Ida B. Wells. Releasing at 12pm EST, the coins will be available in 2-roll sets, 3-rolls sets, and 100-coin bags from Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco (3-roll sets only).
Ahead of her time, Ida B. Wells was a suffragist, civil rights activist, and investigative journalist. Using her voice to speak out against and investigate lynching and other social injustices against Black people, she also co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Wells traveled across the country and overseas to bring to light state-sanctioned violence despite being in danger herself. In addition to her work for civil rights, she was an active member in the women’s club and suffrage movements and would later get involved in social work in the growing city of Chicago.
The quarter dollar features Wells gazing courageously and proudly towards the future on the reverse. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IDA B. WELLS, 25 CENTS, JOURNALIST, SUFFRAGIST, and CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST are inscribed around the entirely of the design as well.
Laura Gardin Fraser’s portrait of George Washington continues to grace the common obverse throughout the program. The design was originally entered into contest for the 1932 quarter which honored the First President’s birth. LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2025 are seen inscribed along with the corresponding mintmarks.
The 100-coin bags from Philadelphia and Denver retail at $47.25, the 2-roll sets at $42.00, and the 3-roll sets (including San Francisco) at $63.00.
Juliette Gordon Law, Dr. Vera Rubin, Stacey Park Milbern, and Althea Gibson are upcoming for the program that is set to officially end this year.
