Continuing with their Presidential Silver Medal, the United States Mint will honor the 23rd President of the United States today beginning at 12pm EST.
Struck in one Troy ounce of .999 fine silver, the medal will feature Benjamin Harrison on the obverse with the inscription BENJAMIN HARRISON on either side of his bust. The reverse features the inscriptions INAUGURATED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES MARCH 4 1889 with a laurel wreath surrounding them.
Harrison was nominated for President on the eight ballot at the 1888 Republican National Convention. He was said to have conducted one of the first front porch Presidential campaigns, which means he stayed close to home and gave speeches to supporters who visited. Harrison was from Indianapolis, Indiana. Smaller in stature, the 5’6” Harrison was often subject to taunting as Democrats would call him “Little Ben.” Republicans would then fire back at the comments, claiming he was big enough to wear the hat of “Old Tippecanoe,” which was his grandfather.
C.E. Barber designed both the obverse and reverse of the matte finish silver medal. It will retail for $90.00 and come in a velvet presentation case with an outer box sleeve accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
