Barber Dimes
Introduced in 1892, the series followed the Coinage Act of 1873 specifications: 2.5 grams, 90% silver and 10% copper. Production continued through 1916 with routine fluctuations tied to economic conditions and mint capacity. By the mid-1910s, a national push for more artistic coinage led to the Mercury (Winged Liberty Head) dime in late 1916, closing the Barber chapter without changing the denomination or metal standard.
These dimes circulated widely, paying everyday expenses from transit fares to groceries. Heavy use left many examples well-worn by the 1910s. The shift to the Mercury design reflected changing artistic tastes and a desire to refresh America’s circulating coinage.
