Jefferson Nickel Series
In 1938 the U.S. Mint launched a public competition to replace the Buffalo nickel. The winning entry by sculptor Felix Schlag paired a classical profile of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse with Monticello, Jefferson’s Virginia home, on the reverse. After requested refinements to lettering and the perspective of Monticello by the Commission of Fine Arts, the design entered circulation late that year, quickly supplanting the outgoing type.
The series has mirrored U.S. history through notable updates. During World War II, composition changed to conserve nickel for war needs. Decades later, the Westward Journey nickels (2004–2006) temporarily replaced the reverse to commemorate the Lewis and Clark expedition and introduced updated portraits, before a modernized Monticello reverse returned in 2006.
