This year marks The Coin Vault’s 31st Anniversary. Our parent company, SilverTowne, is celebrating its 70th Anniversary this year as well. With over 100 years of experience in numismatics spanning three generations in the same family, it is safe to say that we have knowledge on tap here and we are not likely to run out any time soon.
With that being said, our numismatic prowess can stand up to anyone which also means we have seen a number of coins over the years. So, with all that in our back pocket, there has to have been a favorite work it’s way to the front for some of us. Right?
This new “ask” series will get the low down of some of the most cherished coins to those who work within these walls. First up? Our CEO and third generation numismatist, Brock Abel.
The Winner: 1895 Proof Morgan Dollar
“SilverTowne’s backbone is silver dollars,” Brock said. “Arguably, we have handled more than anyone in the world as a company. Morgan dollars, peace dollars. I grew up in the silver dollar world.”
The 1895 Proof Morgan Dollar is considered by most as the ‘King of Morgan Dollars.’ With a low mintage of just 880, NGC’s census has only graded 256 coins with the highest realized in a PF68. The price guide recorded? $155,000.
“It’s a very expensive coin with a limited mintage,” he stated. “That’s a great selling point. It holds its value in today’s climate where so many people are building Morgan dollar sets.”
Although not owning one himself (could you blame him?), it did not take long for him to come up with a favorite.
“As I said, I grew up with Morgan dollars and Peace dollars. That was a huge part of our business and still is in a lot of ways.”
The runner up? You guessed it: another Morgan.
“The 1894 P,” he declared. “It also has a limited mintage and has great value. It typically is in a nicer condition that the 1893 S Morgan. So you can get a better-looking coin and save thousands at the same time. The 1894 P Morgan Dollar is a close second for me.”
