On June 4, 2019, a bill called the “Women’s Suffrage Centennial Coin Act” passed making it one step closer to being the second commemorative series to be lined up for 2020.
Originally introduced on April 30th by Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn, the bill (S.1235) was co-sponsored by all 25 women within the Senate. The bill introduces a design and production requirement in 2020 for a commemorative silver dollar honoring the 100th Anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote for the first time. The design itself is to feature women in history who have worked directly with suffrage movement within the United States.
The bill passed the Senate floor in less than five weeks after it was produced and is now on its way to Congress. Congress is to progress the bill rather quickly due to a time crunch that would involve the United States Mint’s process of reviewing and implementing the designs. Bills such as these are usually presented further in advance but with the help of the Senate’s quick passing, the bill now lies in the hands of Congress.
