Vintage United States gold. It is a beautiful thing, is it not?
Collectors of The Coin Vault have been faced with a vast number of vintage gold pieces offered on the show lately. While some may not know, aside from selling coins, we buy coins through our parent company, SilverTowne, as well. Some of that filters through our retail space and some of it comes from estate dealings and collections from all over. As far as all the rare gold you have seen lately? Well, let us just say we “struck gold.”
“We bought a major collection of United States rare gold and other type coins through an inheritance from a very prominent collector,” Brock Abel, the CEO of SilverTowne, said. “We have had a great response from our collectors in regard to the coins we have been able to offer from that collection and rightly so. They are beautiful, one-of-a-kind coins.”
Due to the appetite of our collectors brought forth from this deal, Brock finds it important to continue offering vintage gold as much as we can.
“We did not realize how much our collectors wanted coins such as these since vintage rare gold can be out of reach budget-wise for a number of people,” he said. “On the other hand, I think our collectors and collectors, in general, like it for the numismatic value as well as the gold content. Most of the coins we have been offering have been around for 100 years. They are better in my opinion than having a modern gold coin for their history alone.”
Budget: that is a GREAT point.
“Even when we are not focusing on this particular collection, vintage gold can be attainable depending on your budget if you, as a collector, find it important to collect it,” Brock said. “More budget-friendly pieces can be found in $2.5 Gold Indians and $2.5 Gold Liberty coins. Those prices can vary depending on condition and date, but they are more affordable than say a $20 St. Gaudens gold coin or a $50 Gold Slug for example. If a collector finds vintage rare gold to be a must-have, then there are ways to own it with a light budget for sure.”
If you have been able to get your hands on a single coin from this collection (titled 2020 TCV Gold Rush for reference) as we have been offering them on the show, first of all, congratulations. Second of all, it is important to know what you have, even if the vintage gold in your collection did not come from us.
“It is important for the collector to know what coin it is,” Brock says. “Whether it is a Gold Indian or St. Gaudens or Gold Liberty piece, that is the starting point. From there, knowing what the denomination is, the fine gold content, and the condition is next to follow. All of these are important to know when owning coins like these. If ever there was a point that you would go out and sell something of this stature, you HAVE TO KNOW what you have.”
All of the coins offered have been certified because of their incredible dates and conditions, something that is important when deciding between raw or certified gold coins such as these.
“Certification is important when the coins are better dated and in better condition,” Brock explained. “We trust that third parties are better than us at determining those things. With the vibrance and collectibility that this collection provided, we would have been doing a disservice to these coins and our collectors not to get them certified. That is how incredible these rare coins really are.”
Whether you are in the market for heavy hitters like these coins or not, their popularity has really opened a different door for us based on our customers’ response. If you are one of those customers and are looking for more, tune in to the show and call in as there are a number of other options available that do not always make it to air. If you are someone wanting to dip their toe into the vintage gold waters, this collection may be the best opportunity considering how wonderful the collection has panned out in terms of condition and better dates. Either way, gold has been a bigger focus for us at The Coin Vault and it will continue to be as long as you deem it important!
