The United States Mint is getting closer and closer to the final decision for the brand new reverses of both the Gold American Eagle and Silver American Eagle bullion coins for 2021. We mentioned at the tail end of last year that Mint Director David J. Ryder confirmed that anti-counterfeiting measures for the bullion coins were being actively pursued. The redesign of the reverses would incorporate both state-of-the-art security and protection with brand new anti-counterfeiting technology, something other world mints have already implemented in their bullion coins.
No matter the reason for the design changes, the hobby was set abuzz and many were left wondering just how different the designs for the most collected and most beloved bullion coin program would be. On June 23rd, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) held a meeting to discuss many upcoming coins and medal designs for next year with the American Eagle program as a top priority. A total of 39 submissions for both the Silver and Gold American Eagle reverse were revealed to the CCAC for review. According to CoinWorld, the committee was said to have passed along their proposed designs, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. It is not clear whether the designs came from the Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) or from the Mint staff themselves.
Next year, it will be the 35th Anniversary of the American Eagle bullion program in general. Both the Gold American Eagle and Silver American Eagle programs have been produced since 1986 in response to the Liberty Coin Act signed into law in 1985 by President Ronald Reagan. Neither program’s reverses or obverses have changed since its inception.
